Authorities have arrested a man they say killed his ex-wife early Wednesday morning in Winnfield.
Gregory Washington has been charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of killing Jacquelyn Washington after an argument got out of control.
The victim was found shot and stabbed multiple times in her home on South Jones Street in Winnfield. Police officials believe the incident happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
"We believe it was an argument that turned into something worse," Winnfield Police Lt. Charles Curry said.
Curry said there had been several domestic-violence charges filed in the past against Gregory Washington, and he served nine years in prison after attempting to run over his ex-wife with a vehicle.
Winnfield police quickly identified Gregory Washington as the suspect, and he was apprehended in Grant Parish about seven hours after the homicide.
"He had fled the scene after the incident," Curry said. "He made some calls to some family members, and we were able to track his approximate location from his cell phone over in Grant Parish."
Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop E and deputies from the Grant Parish Sheriff's Office apprehended Washington around 10:30 or 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Curry said.
Washington was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and he was served the second-degree murder warrant by Winnfield police and extradited to Winnfield on Wednesday night.
Curry said the investigation into the homicide remains ongoing, but Winnfield police expect to turn the case over to the Winn Parish District Attorney's Office within the next few days.
