San Bernardino, CA: Toddler,3, killed in shooting spree

San Bernardino police said a good Samaritan who stopped a woman from being assaulted may have prompted the shooting on a home that killed a 3-year-old San Bernardino girl.

A man opened fire on the home on North D and Wabash streets, about 7:40 p.m., killing 3-year-old Nylah Franco-Torres, according to San Bernardino police.

A pregnant woman and another toddler remained in critical condition this afternoon. Police said the unborn child is in good condition.

The front of the single-story home at D and Wabash streets was riddled with bullet holes and puddles of blood remained on the porch this morning as other family members arrived to gather belongings.

Authorities said early in the day a man from the same house had intervened when he saw another man hitting a woman in the neighborhood. Because of his actions, the woman was able to escape.

Police believe the same man seen hitting the woman was the gunman who returned to the house on foot and fired as the children were playing on the front porch with their mother.

Authorities this morning pleaded in a press conference for witnesses to the crime to come forward. Neither the woman being assaulted or two men who witnessed the beating have been found.

"We believe there are individuals who have information that can help us solve this tragic, senseless, despicable homicide," San Bernardino Police Chief Keith Kilmer said. "Our hearts go out to the family. When you have the death of a child, no matter how tough you are, no matter how experienced you are, it still gets to you."

The suspect was described as a black man in his early 20s, about 6-feet tall with a thin build, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Detective Mike Vasilis at 909-384-5636 or the Homicide Hotline at 909-384-5656.

The mayhem at a family gathering on D Street was one of four shootings overnight in the city.

Two other men and a woman were shot in separate incidents across the city.
