Police: Man kills himself after shooting mother in the head

June 11, 2009

A man apparently shot his mother in the head with a shotgun before fatally shooting himself Thursday afternoon in a home in southwest suburban Channahon.

Police received a call about 11:30 a.m. of shots being fired and a woman crying for help inside a home in the 26000 block of West Highland Drive, according to Channahon police Chief Joe Pena.

When officers entered the home, they went to the basement and found a woman on the floor bleeding from the head, he said. Her son lay nearby, dead from an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

The woman was transported in an unidentified condition to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon.

Police believe her son shot her in the head with a shotgun before taking his own life, the chief said. Police do not believe anyone else was involved and are not seeking any suspects.

The Will County Coroner’s office was notified of a death in Channahon, but was not releasing any further details as of 4 p.m. Thursday.
