A Gilbert man killed his 3-year-old daughter and then himself Sunday, according to Mesa police.
The bodies of the man and the girl, killed from apparent gunshot wounds, were found in Coconino County, near Jacob Lake.
According to Sgt. Ed Wessing, Mesa police spokesman, the man’s father called Mesa police, worried that his son, who had just gone through a divorce, was suicidal.
Wessing said the girl’s mother had filed a police report Friday when the man hadn’t returned with the girl.
“All the family knew was he was camping somewhere,” Wessing said.
The man made calls to his family, making them worried about his state of mind.
Investigators were able to track his phone to a section in northern Arizona and he finally told a relative he was at Jacob Lake, which is near the Grand Canyon.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office sent a deputy, who found the bodies.
