Guy McGlaughlin was an officer with the Bismarck Police Department when he killed his girlfriend in 1988.
He's serving a murder sentence and is set to get out of prison in three years.
But as Donnell Preskey reports the North Dakota Parole board considers shortening his time.
One night turned Guy McGlaughlin from cop to criminal..
23 years later the ND Parole Board wants to know about that night..
(Guy McGlaughlin) "at desert arguing, tried to calm her down, passed out or asleep. Pulled her out of vehicle layed her down and shot her." 22 year old Henrietta Redlegs was McGlaughlin's girlfriend
He says the verbal and physical abuse had escalated in their relationship... (McGlaughlin) "if she's not gonna stop, I'll stop her. Shoot her." He shot her in the back with his work revolver, then called the Bismarck Police Department to turn himself in

McGlaughlin pleaded guilty to murder and is serving a 40 year sentence
(McGlaughlin) "Done my best to stay out of trouble." McGlaughlin's good time release date is August 2014 a day when he could just walk out of prison a free man
The Parole board decides to release him 9 months early to a transition center so he can get help finding a job, a place to live and adjust to a society he hasn't seen in 25 years. He'll be 65
McGlaughlin says he's excited for his release saying "it's a long time coming."
McGlaughlin will be released November 27th 2013 to one of the two transition centers in the area and be supervised until August 2014.
