ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say a 32-year-old Itta Bena man shot and injured his 18-year-old girlfriend before returning to his apartment and killing himself.
The Greenwood Commonwealth (http://bit.ly/oTIIml ) reports that Leflore County deputies found Tyrone Swinney dead in his bedroom late Monday, with a .25-caliber pistol by his side.
Sheriff Ricky Banks says Swinney's girlfriend, Taniqua Jones, told investigators that Swinney had been drinking gin and was upset because he thought Jones had stayed too long that day at Mississippi Delta Community College, where she's a student.
Banks says witnesses told investigators that Swinney was "real possessive," and that he shot Jones while she was outside.
Authorities say Jones was shot once the back of the head but the bullet didn't penetrate her skull. She was treated Greenwood Leflore Hospital, then released.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
