DENVER - Police responding to a domestic violence call opened fire on a man after he reportedly approached them with a knife and a meat cleaver.
According Sonny Jackson, a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department, dispatchers received a call around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday of a domestic disturbance in the 2700 block of Ulster Street in the Stapleton neighborhood.
Officers say after they arrived a man came out the front door of the home with a knife in one hand and a meat cleaver in the other. They say the suspect appeared to be "enraged."
Jackson says officers ordered the man to drop the weapons. When he refused, they fired a rubber bullet at him. Officers say the man continued to approach them, so they used lethal force.
The suspect was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he died from a gunshot wound.
Police have not released the identity of the man, but say other family members in the home were not injured in the incident.
