Cheatham County authorities said no charges will likely be filed against a woman who shot and killed her estranged husband last week.
Authorities said Diane Sanders, 51, shot Bobby Sanders, 64, multiple times at 2870 Mosley Ferry Road in the West Cheatham area on April 6 shortly after 10 p.m.
Diane Sanders was questioned by authorities, but will not been charged, said detective Floyd Duncan. However, an autopsy was ordered and the case will be turned over the district attorney’s office.
Duncan said Diane Sanders called 911 and admitted to shooting her husband, who had violated a restraining order by coming onto the property.
The detective said Bobby Sanders told Diane Sanders that if he couldn’t have her, then no one else could and he threatened to kill both of them.
“He came in the home carrying a gun. In fear, she grabbed her gun and began firing,” Duncan said.
Bobby Sanders was found dead in the kitchen, he said.
Duncan said the incident appears to be a case of self-defense.
“She followed everything by the letter of the law — reporting every incident,” said Duncan, adding the Bobby Sanders should not have been on the property.
Court records show that Diane Sanders filed for divorce on Jan. 21, but the divorce had not yet been granted.
Bobby Sanders, who was living on Ed Harris Road, was arrested on April 5 for violating an order of protection against his wife. He was released the following day.
According to the police report, Diane Sanders told authorities that Bobby Sanders said he was “checking on her.”
The report also said that Bobby Sanders had recently cut locks off the gates on the property and had been on the property several times over the past several days.
County 911 records show that there were five calls from 2870 Mosley Ferry Road since March 31, including two calls on the day of the shooting.
A rental home at 2900 Mosley Ferry Road, which is owned by Diane Sanders, was destroyed by fire late Monday night, Henrietta fire chief Jeff Bagwell said.
The home, which was next to the couple’s home, was not occupied at the time.
The Henrietta fire department received the call about 11:40 p.m. The cause of the fire has not been determined, Bagwell said.
Police records show that Bobby Sanders had been arrested seven times since 2003. Charges included driving under the influence, driving on a revoked, suspended or canceled license, possession of a Schedule III drug, possession of a Schedule IV drug and probation violation.
The Sanders operated Sycamore Real Estate in Ashland City.
Funeral services for Bobby Sanders were Saturday at Boyd Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Cheatham Memorial Gardens in Pleasant View.
