BELTON — A Killeen man is charged with killing his 22-year-old girlfriend; he claims his gun accidentally went off in his hand.
Kevin Clavon Wright, 31, was indicted by a Bell County grand jury Wednesday on murder charges in connection with the Feb. 11 incident that stemmed from an argument.
While responding to a call at Wright's home in the 1100 block of Garth Drive, officers found a woman on the floor with a gunshot wound on the left side of her head behind her ear. A justice of the peace pronounced the woman, who shared the home with Wright, dead less than an hour later, at 3 a.m.
Wright admitted to police that he was arguing with his girlfriend because she came home late. He said he took his gun out of his shoulder harness and "racked a round" in an attempt to frighten her, according to the arrest affidavit.
The gun went off and she was shot in the head, Wright said. He took police to a field to the south of the apartment building and located a .40-caliber handgun with an empty magazine.
Wright could be found guilty of murder through two means: by knowingly causing the death of the woman by shooting her, or by accidentally killing her while in the course of committing another felony, aggravated assault or deadly conduct.
