Polk County deputies have arrested a Mulberry man they say used an 8-inch butcher knife to stab his girlfriend and kill his dog.
Deputies arrested David McCorkle, 55, on Tuesday and charged him with one count each of attempted murder - domestic violence, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and animal cruelty causing death.
According to a Sheriff's Office report, McCorkle got into an argument with his live-in girlfriend about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday. The argument escalated and McCorkle stabbed his girlfriend multiple times with the butcher knife in the torso area, causing life-threatening injuries.
When deputies arrived on the scene, both McCorkle and the victim came out of the house. Both were bloody and armed with knives, the Sheriff's Office said. The victim collapsed while McCorkle stood in the driveway, three stab wound visible on his torso, the report said.
Deputies told McCorkle to put down the knife, at which time he replied, “kill me,” and then threw the knife at them, the report said. McCorkle then fell to the ground and was taken into custody. His girlfriend was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where she underwent surgery and is now in critical condition.
Before emergency personnel transported them from the scene, both McCorkle and his girlfriend told deputies they had been fighting over McCorkle being unemployed, and that McCorkle had stabbed her and the dog, and then he stabbed himself.
The dog's body was located inside the home, dead from multiple stab wounds. McCorkle's girlfriend stated she armed herself with a knife during the attack to defend herself, however, his wounds are self-admittedly self-inflicted. McCorkle told deputies he killed the dog as the dog was trying to protect his girlfriend from being stabbed.
McCorkle was taken to LRMC to be treated for his self-inflicted wounds. He remains there at this time, under the watch of a PCSO deputy, and will be transported to the Polk County Jail upon his release.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
