MELBOURNE --
A Brevard deputy shot and killed a man Tuesday, after officials said the suspect forced a woman into his car and started stabbing her.
Brevard deputies said that the male suspect forced a woman into his car and drove off. A deputy spotted the car driving along Pineda Causeway, and tried to stop it. The suspect instead drove into the water.
"The deputy went into the water and when he got closer, he could see a male suspect stabbing a female," said Major Michael DeMorat, with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.
Terry Friday was nearby when she noticed deputies racing to the water and running in. It was only later that she realized what had happened.
"It's a scary thing to realize it was so close to home that people are shooting or trying to do whatever and it's right here- especially at a busy time of the day," said Friday.
The deputy, who was first on scene, went into the water, drew his gun and shot the suspect, killing him. The female victim was later pulled to safety and taken to a local hospital.
"Obviously it was a life or death situation. The deputy did a great job responding to that. He was actually stabbing the female and it took his life to stop that," said DeMorat.
Deputies have not released the names of the suspect or victim, or the nature of their relationship. Deputies described the emergency call they received as involving a domestic disturbance.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
