Deputies said Wednesday that 41-year-old Heriberto Jimenez stabbed his girlfriend, an unidentified 45-year-old, 31 times before he was shot by a deputy.
Investigators said Jimenez, who lived in the Orlando area, attacked the woman after a breakup.
Jimenez died at the scene. The victim remains in stable condition at a hospital.
At about 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies received a call from a witness who said a man who physically forced a woman into a vehicle fled from a beach access in the Patrick Air Force Base area.
Deputies said they spotted the man's vehicle on Pineda Causeway. One deputy saw there was a struggle inside the car, but he said the driver refused to stop.
According to responding deputies, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the Indian River.
The deputy said he rushed to the car, which was by then submerged in four feet of water, and saw the man stabbing the woman inside the car.
The deputy ordered the man to stop, but he said the man refused to comply. The deputy said he was forced to shoot him to stop him from stabbing the victim.
Another deputy then pulled the woman from the vehicle and carried her to the bank, where he said the woman received medical attention.
The Sheriff's Office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center and was last reported in serious but stable condition.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the actions taken prevented the woman from being brutally murdered. I could not be more proud of the decisive and immediate actions of our deputy sheriffs," Sheriff Jack Parker said.
