Whiteville, NC: Woman killed when hit by boyfriend's car

WHITEVILLE - A 22-year-old Bladenboro woman was killed early Saturday when she was struck by her boyfriend's car, according to the Highway Patrol.

Kristy Nicole Yarbrough, 22, of Pecan Street, was sitting on Old Stake Road near Chadbourn when she was hit by a 2000 Hyundai driven by Mitchell Monroe Ransom II, also 22, at about 1:05 a.m. Saturday, said Trooper K.D. Ivey.

The couple had been drinking at a party nearby, Ivey said. Witnesses there said Yarbrough left on foot because Ransom wasn't ready to leave at the same time, the trooper said.

Ransom left about 15 minutes later to look for her, according to the trooper. He drove north, turned around and hit Yarbrough while heading back south, Ivey said.

It was foggy and Ransom said he didn't see Yarbrough before hitting her, according to the trooper. Ivey said the damage to the car and Yarbrough's injuries indicated she was sitting when she was hit. Yarbrough died at the scene, Ivey said.

Ransom, who lives on Lennon Drive in Bladenboro, was charged with felony death by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and driving while impaired, Ivey said. He was placed in the Columbus County Jail with bail set at $55,000.

This tragedy is not an intimate or domestic violence situation, but is a horrific accident.
