One of the two student victims of a murder-suicide at San Jose State University was a graduate of Granite Bay High School, his father said Thursday.
Thomas Kyle Williams, 26, was shot and killed in a university parking garage. Police say Williams was sitting in a car with fellow accounting student Marcory Caliguiran, 25, Tuesday night when the woman's husband, Napoleon Caliguiran, fired multiple gunshots while standing outside the vehicle owned by the Caliguirans. The gunman then shot himself, police said.
Williams and Marcory Caliguiran were pronounced dead at the scene. Napoleon Caliguiran was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Williams' father, Thomas Williams of Meadow Vista in Placer County, said that his son graduated from Granite Bay High School in 2003. He attended Sierra Community College in Rocklin before transferring to San Jose State University in August 2009.
"He liked to play golf, tennis, ride bikes and wakeboard. He did all the types of things Granite Bay High students did," Thomas Williams said.
He said his son was recently recognized during an honors convocation at the university for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average for the past two semesters. He had been hired by the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and was scheduled to begin work in the company's San Jose office in September.
In addition to his parents, Thomas and Lori Williams, of Meadow Vista, Thomas Kyle Williams leaves his wife of three years, Katie.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
"We don't know a lot, and we may never know a lot about the series of events that led up to the parking garage on Tuesday night," said San Jose State spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris.
News of the deaths hit student body President Tomaz Kolodziejak especially hard. He took classes with Marcory Caliguiran, whom he knew as "Cindy," and recently worked with her on a senior project.
Kolodziejak said Thursday that he spoke with the honors student frequently and thought something was wrong when the usually reliable Caliguiran didn't show up for class Wednesday morning.
"We started calling, texting, emailing her. She didn't respond," Kolodziejak told the Associated Press. "So the whole day was sort of terrifying. We thought it could be her, but nobody wanted to believe that. We thought maybe she was sick."
Kolodziejak said that despite their constant contact, he didn't know that Caliguiran was married. He said that several classmates often walked her to her car from classes for general safety and he believes Williams was likely doing that when they were killed Tuesday night.
Kolodziejak said an on-campus memorial likely will be held for the victims.
Thomas Williams said services for his son are pending, but he expects a memorial to be held in San Jose and another in the Granite Bay area.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
