Sylva, NC: PROTECTIVE ORDER FILED HOURS BEFORE MURDERS

Shots fired inside a Sylva home Friday afternoon, may have been triggered by an earlier act of violence. Melody Conger and Kevin Frady were killed Friday, the same day a protection order was filed against the alleged gunman Matthew Moore.

"Unfortunately you can't stop an individual who is intent on committing a murder," says Julia Freeman, Executive Director of Haywood County REACH." A restraining order or criminal charges are not going to prevent that from happening."

Conger filed the protective order after a dispute in the Walmart parking lot Monday, in front of their four month old daughter. Conger states in the order "He grabbed my wrist and bent it backwards, until it popped." The order also states, "It clearly appears that there is a danger of acts of domestic violence against the plaintiff." Hours after the order was filed, Melody Conger was dead.

Friday's murders bring painful memories from the past to the surface for many people in Sylva. Bonnie Woodring was staying at the REACH shelter in Jackson County in 2006, when her estranged husband shot her. Only days before her murder, she had taken out a restraining order against him.
