Police identified the man who stabbed his
estranged wife’s live-in boyfriend and then
killed himself as Randall Jason Martin.
Michigan State Police officials at the
Brighton post said Monday that 40-year-
old Martin, of Handy Township, barged into
his estranged wife’s Pinckney Road home
Saturday and stabbed her live-in
boyfriend, Steven Nicholas Sayre, 41, with
a pocketknife several times in the neck,
throat and abdomen while two children, 11
and 13, were in the house.
Hours after the incident, Martin shot and
killed himself while sitting in his truck in the
400 block of Fowlerville Road in Handy
Township as a state trooper tried to talk to
him, police said.
Sayre was listed in critical condition Sunday
at the University of Michigan Medical Center
in Ann Arbor, but a spokeswoman said
Monday that he is not listed in the system.
It is unknown if he was released or
transferred to another facility.
Police said Martin had been at the woman’s
house earlier in the day and the two
argued about property in the presence of
the boyfriend. Martin also was upset
another male was in the home, but he left
without incident, police said.
“He walked out and waved cordially,”
Trooper Jeff Frasier said Saturday.
However, Martin returned just after
midnight, entering the home in the 2700
block of Pinckney Road through an
unlocked side door of the garage.
Sayre, who had been living there just a few
weeks, heard a noise and found Martin in
the garage. An argument broke out, and
Martin yelled at Sayre, threatening to kill
him and saying he wanted to talk to his
wife, police said.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
