York County, PA: Murder Suicide Investigation

CBS 21 News is learning more information about a couple involved in what police say was a murder suicide in York County.

Police say around 4pm Monday, 68 year old Bonnie Miller contacted out-of-state relatives and said she had locked herself in her basement and that she feared for her life.

At 6:50pm, police came to the home, entered it, and heard what they thought was a single gunshot. They immediately retreated and waited for the York County Quick Response Team to arrive.

After several hours of surveillance, the Quick Response Team went back inside and found both Bonnie Miller and her 70 year old husband, Ken Miller, dead in the basement - each with one gunshot wound to the head.

Police say Ken shot Bonnie, then himself.

Kenneth Miller is a retired police Sergeant with the Springettsbury Township Police Department. Chief David Eshbach says Miller lead the Department's criminal investigation unit and filled in as Police Chief for a period of time in 1997.

After 26 years, Miller retired from the force in 1998. Chief Eshbach says the last time he has seen Miller was at the Department's 50th Anniversary Party last December.

Eshbach says a suicide note was not found and a motive is not known. Eshbach explains Miller's family told authorities that Ken had been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

The Springettsbury Township Police Department says it could not talk about Ken Miller's work as a member of the force or discuss him personally, as the Department investigates the murder-suicide.

CBS21 News tracked down a man who knows Miller professionally and says the incident is shocking and out of character for Miller.

"Kenny was always there to serve the community. Obviously, he worked very close with his colleagues. I'm sure this is a tremendous shock to the Springettsbury Township Police Department and all of those who have ever met Kenny," says State Representative Keith Gillespie.

Gillespie says he used to work as a Medic and would see Miller at accident scenes. Gillespie says, "Miller was always wanting to help."
