PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- David "Johnny" Tineo, charged with murdering his girlfriend, Ingrid Gonzalez, in Providence last month, bludgeoned her to death with a baseball bat, a state prosecutor said Monday morning.

Tineo, 32, was arrested in New York City on July 5, hours after the Providence policediscovered Gonzalez's body in her Silver Lake home. Acting on a tip, the police in New York had called their counterparts in Providence and asked them to check on the well-being of Gonzalez.

Tineo waived extradition to Rhode Island and was brought back here on Friday to face the murder charge. As is customary in murder cases, he entered no plea in District Court, Providence, on Monday morning and was ordered held without bail. Another prosecutor presented Tineo as an alleged bail violator in a drug possession case after he failed to appear in court on April 22.

A bench warrant had already been issued for Tineo's arrest before Gonzaleaz died, said Michael Healey, a spokesman for the attorney general's office. A date of Aug. 17 was set for a combined hearing in Superior Court on the murder charge and on the alledged bail violation.

Special Assistant Attorney General Molly Cote said investigators had gathered much evidence against Tineo, including blood evidence and statements that Tineo made to "certain state witnesses."

Healey said the evidence will be presented to a grand jury, which will decide whether to indict him on the murder charge.

Gonzalez, 34, was the mother of two boys, one of whom was home the night she was killed. Her older son told investigators that he heard no commotion from his mother's bedroom, where apparently she had been murdered.

Gonzalez was running a hair salon in the front of her bungalow home.
