BOSTON - A Boston man has been sentenced to life in prison for beating and strangling his girlfriend before slashing her throat while her four children slept in the apartment they shared.

Jose Torres was convicted in Suffolk Superior Court on Thursday of first-degree murder for the March 2008 slaying of Melissa Santiago in the city's Dorchester section.

Prosecutors say the 27-year-old Torres flew into a rage during an argument with Santiago. He beat her, strangled her with an electrical cord, cut her throat, then doused her body in bleach before leaving the apartment. The three oldest children, ages 6, 5 and 3 at the time, found their 29-year-old mother's body the next day.

Defense lawyer Jeffrey Karp said Torres "makes no excuses" for what he did.
