Batesburg-Leesville Police Department and Lexington County Sheriff’s Office responded to China 1 restaurant in Batesburg where a man shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. 27-year old Jamael R. Goodman, shot and killed 30-year old Shaquanah Jones-Brannon (both of Leesville) around 11 a.m, Monday, May 21, 2012.
According to Chief Oswald, police were seeking Goodman before the shooting occurred due to a domestic violence complaint filed by Jones-Branno earlier in the day. Police had advised the victim not to go to work until they met up with her boyfriend. Jones-Branno did go to work and Goodman showed up a short time later and opened fire. The restaurant did have customers at the time of the shooting. Jones-Branno and Goodman were the only ones harmed in the incident. Both were transported to Lexington Medical Center where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) expresses that almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records, are killed by an intimate partner. South Carolina is ranked seventh in the nation for the number of deaths involving men killing women.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
