MUSCATINE— A Muscatine man is dead after police say he tried to kill his wife before turning the gun on himself.
Around 3:30pm Saturday Muscatine police were called to 1933 Vail avenue after receiving a 911 call of shots fired.
"Report from female residence in house that male subject had discharged weapon," said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jose Varela.
Police say the woman was able to make it out safely despite being shot at.
"Some information released to us that shots fired in her direction," said Varela.
As she was running to a neighbors for help, police say a second round of gunfire erupted. Neighbors say the married couple who lived in the house had recently been fighting. Saturday they could only stand in disbelief as police set up a perimeter trying to make cell phone contact with the man inside for nearly and hour before going inside.
"After maintaining perimeter on house and made entry, sheriff did locate male subject in house that suffered self inflicted gunshot wound," said Varela.
Police have not said where the man shot himself but say it appears he tried to kill his wife before turning the gun on himself.
The name of the victim has not been released and the investigation continues.
