MARATHON It appears Broward County resident Dam Lopez will have his day in court after all.
Lopez, 27, is accused of manslaughter in the shooting death of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Andrea V. Anzola Villafrade of Deerfield Beach, at the Knights Key Inn in Marathon on March 22, 2008.
Assistant State Attorney Patrick McCullah had said in March a settlement in the case was likely, but a trial is now scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 16 in Marathon.
Depositions were recently finished and McCullah said the discovery process on both sides is nearly complete. Lopez faces a 30-year maximum sentence if convicted.
Lopez, from Plantation, is represented by Assistant Monroe County Public Defender Tony Barrows. Both Barrows and McCullah declined comment since the case appears headed for trial.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
