Bolingbrook, IL: Bolingbrook man gets 20 years for stabbing death after 2009 Christmas party

A Bolingbrook man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday after he admitted he stabbed and killed another man in the neck after a Christmas party in 2009.

Marco Rodriguez, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after prosecutors said he attacked Roberto Cortez with a kitchen knife in the 100 block of Campbell Drive on the morning of Dec. 26, 2009.

A neighbor driving down Campbell called police after seeing Cortez lying near his vehicle, which was still running.

Prosecutors said Cortez, of Romeoville, made a pass at Rodriguez’s wife, and Rodriguez felt disrespected by Cortez’ advances and wanted to uphold his family’s honor.

Rodriguez and his wife had one child at the time, prosecutors said, and another was on the way. The attack happened after a night of drinking, and Cortez’s blood alcohol content after his death was 0.186.

After Rodriguez stabbed Cortez, prosecutors said, he and his wife gathered their belongings and fled. Police eventually found them at a hotel in Des Plaines, and found a knife in a vehicle parked nearby.

Judge Daniel Rozak sentenced Rodriguez after he pleaded guilty Friday in Will County Court.
