ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A man has been acquitted in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend outside an Albuquerque coffee shop in November 2007.
After a 2 1/2-week trial, a Bernalillo County District Court jury acquitted Jack Nguyen on charges of second degree murder, the lesser included charge of voluntary manslaughter and a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Nguyen also was acquitted on a charge of tampering with evidence while jurors were deadlocked on charges of involuntary manslaughter and an additional tampering with evidence charge.
Nguyen was arrested after he confronted his ex-girlfriend and a companion outside of the store. During trial, Nguyen argued that his actions were partly in self-defense.
Under New Mexico law, the District Attorney's Office can elect to retry Nguyen on the charges on which jurors were unable to reach a verdict.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
