A Powhatan County man shot his live-in girlfriend in the leg and later killed himself Thursday with a self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said.
Authorities identified the gunman as Jimmie O. Dibble, 38, who had lived with the woman in the Walnut Creek subdivision.
Powhatan deputies were called about 7:15 p.m. to the 6300 block of Walnut Tree Drive off U.S. 60 in western Powhatan. The victim told authorities that her boyfriend had shot her but that she didn't know where he was.
Deputies believed Dibble was inside his home, but he did not speak to family members or deputies when they tried to engage him. At some point, a gunshot rang out from an upstairs room.
Dibble's body was discovered about 11:45 p.m.
The wounded woman was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Powhatan Sheriff Gregory A. Neal described the incident as domestic but did not discuss what had prompted the shooting and suicide.
