A Lakeland man fatally shot his wife's mother, then called 911 and said she tried to kill herself, police said.
Shaquan Hibbert, and her husband, Christopher Hibbert, were arguing about 6:50 p.m. Thursday, police said. The woman's mother, Rose Ann Smith, 41, tried to break up the fight, and Christopher Hibbert shot Smith several times, police said.
The couple were arguing at their home, at 2840 Moonlight Cove Lane, No. 208, because Christopher Hibbert wanted to use his wife's car.
Smith tried to intervene because Christopher Hibbert was about to hit her daughter, police said. Hibbert then went into another room, grabbed a handgun and shot her twice from five feet away, police said.
Hibbert pointed the gun at his wife as she pleaded for her life, then shot Smith once more in the leg, police said.
Hibbert then called 911 and said Smith attempted suicide, police said. He told his wife to say the same thing or else he would also shoot her, police said.
Smith regained consciousness after authorities arrived and told them her son-in-law shot her, police. However, she died about 11 p.m. at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Christopher Hibbert was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
