OLOMANA, Hawaii -- A 71-year-old Kailua man accused of trying to kill his terminally ill wife in the hospital apparently committed suicide on Sunday, officials said.
Robert Yagi was facing an initial court appearance Tuesday and had been banned from visiting his wife in the hospital since the shooting incident last week.
Paramedics, police and fire crews were called to the Yagi home on Ululani Street in Olomana after 1 p.m.
That is where sources said Yagi committed suicide.
Neighbor Roger Messner said he feared for the worst when he saw the emergency crews show up.
"I was worried, knowing what's been going on for the past week for him, and all the stress he's been under and everything," Messner said.
Police charged Yagi with second-degree attempted murder Thursday after detectives said he shot his terminally ill wife in her hospital bed at Castle Medical Center Tuesday night, using a shotgun round from a flare gun.
Yagi wanted to end her life because she's suffering from a terminal disease, police said.
Castle had banned Yagi from returning to the hospital, so he was unable to visit his ailing wife.
Police would not confirm that Yagi killed himself, they would only say there was an unattended death of a man at his home and it is being investigated.
"I'm saddened. He was a good neighbor and I know, a good, loving husband," Messner said.
People in the neighborhood that sits just a couple of blocks from Castle Medical Center said they have not seen Yagi since he was arrested and released on $50,000 bail.
The last time Messner saw him was a few days before the shooting.
"He was sitting out here weeding in his yard, doing yard work and as I walked the dog in the morning, as you can hear in the background, you know, so that's when I saw him last," Messner said.
