West Palm Beach, FL: Wife dead, husband clinging to life

Double shooting (Liz Nunez/ WPTV)
SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL--Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a double shooting that left a wife dead and her husband in critical condition.

It happened in the 300 block of Foresta Terrace late Monday morning.

Deputies say Robert Martens shot and killed his wife Donna before turning the gun on himself.

The couple has lived in their house with their 4 dogs for more than 10 years.

Some neighbors said they never saw today's tragic events coming while others said the couple fought often.

Kay Butterfield, a family friend, said the couple constantly worried about her mother who is in a nursing home. Butterfield also said Robert had serious health issues. "He had a lot of problems with his back and he would take that strong medicine and he would go crazy sometimes, I mean she said he would act like he is crazy."

Just last week Butterfield says she noticed Donna had a big bruise on her cheek.

Detectives are still investigating the incident. Those who knew the couple say they are deeply troubled by what happened.
