CHRIS MILLER, WBT NEWS
A Charlotte man accused of murdering his wife two years ago surprised a courtroom with a guilty plea today as his murder trial was just about to begin.
Larry Fells, 48, was then sentenced to life in prison without parole.
During this morning's court appearance, Fells asked to be sentenced to death for the December 2007 murder of Beatrice Fells.
Authorities said Beatrice Fells, 49, and a fellow cafeteria worker at Myers Park Traditional Elementary were walking along Queens Road West when Larry Fells pulled up alongside them in an SUV and shot his wife several times.
Larry Fells surrendered to a state trooper in Union County several hours after the shooting.
Several weeks before she was killed, Beatrice Fells took out a restraining order against her husband, whom she said was violent and would hit her. Fells said she was afraid her husband would hurt her or their children.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
