Springfield, MO police say the man behind an hours-long stand-off in south Springfield is dead.
Police say they ended the standoff around 11:40 Monday night. They say they found the man dead inside the business they surrounded much of the evening. They say they found a weapon by the man’s body. Officers believe it’s the same weapon used to shoot a woman hours earlier.
Springfield police had been in the stand-off Monday night because the man is suspected of shooting a woman in the head. Police diverted traffic around Campbell Avenue and Battlefield Road.
A woman called 911 from 705 W. Battlefield Road to say she was shot in the ear. She later drove away from the assault and called police from a different location. She's expected to recover. Police call her injuries "non-life threatening."
Police believe the man barricaded himself in the business at 705 W. Battlefield. Police say they didn't know for sure if the man was inside or not. They tried from 7:30 p.m. Monday to contact the man. As of 11 p.m., they had no contact. Officers say the man and the woman were "estranged." They did not know if the couple was married.
They say it's unclear if the man worked for the company on Battlefield Road.
