SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE
A woman who took her own life Sunday was apparently distraught over the death of her son, who fatally shot his estranged wife and her friend before turning the gun on himself May 17 in Chicago's Gage Park community, police said.
Police responded Sunday night about 8:30 p.m. to the 3200 block of West 51st Street after the woman's husband called an ambulance when he found her unresponsive with a gunshot wound, police said.
Piedad Ortiz, 64, was dead on the scene at her home, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. An autopsy Monday determined Ortiz died of a gunshot wound to the chest and her death was ruled a suicide.
Piedad Ortiz had been depressed since the death of her son, Carlos Ortiz, 38, the report said.
The shooting involving Carlos Ortiz happened May 17 about 10:15 p.m. in the 4200 block of West 55th Street, police officer Hector Alfaro said.
Apparently angry over a break up and potential divorce, Carlos Ortiz allegedly shot his wife and then an adult male friend of his wife in the kitchen before heading to her bedroom to shoot himself in the chest and head, police said.
Elvia Alvarez, 29, Miguel Angel Roman Chavez, 34, and Carlos Ortiz, were pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. May 18.
