OAKLAND – A well known area developer shot and killed his wife before fatally turning the gun on himself Friday night.
John Robert Markwood of Oakland was pronounced dead after being flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. His estranged wife, Sharon Jean Markwood, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. at the couple's home on Herrington Manor Road.
The Garrett County Sheriff's Office reported that the preliminary investigation showed John Markwood “shot his estranged wife and moments later shot himself.”
Deputies were called to the scene to investigate reports of gunfire.
Markwood was a prominent businessman, car dealership owner and developer with numerous businesses interests throughout Garrett, Allegany and Mineral counties.
Police said no further information would be released until Monday.
