Sending panicked shoppers scurrying for safety, a man followed his estranged girlfriend into an Old Navy store where she worked in Chicago's Loop on Friday and killed her in a basement area for employees, shooting her several times before turning the gun on himself, police said.
The apparent murder-suicide temporarily shut down traffic near State and Madison streets as rifle-toting police officers swept in to investigate. Outside, worried onlookers huddled and consoled one another as they shared details of the incident that shattered the late-morning downtown hum.
"People were just running out," said Star Walls, 31, who was shopping for children's clothes on the store's third floor.
