FULLERTON, Calif.—A Southern California woman whose family was brutally killed and whose own throat was slashed in the attack recounted her memories of that day at a preliminary hearing.
Leela Dhanak took the stand Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court in Fullerton and described coming home to find her husband bloodied before two men grabbed her, slit her throat and knocked her out.
Iftekhar Murtaza is accused of killing Jayprakash Dhanak, 56, and Karishma Dhanak, 20, with the help of two other men.
Leela Dhanak was found on a neighbor's lawn severely beaten and unconscious.
Prosecutors allege that Murtaza attacked the Dhanaks because they were trying to prevent another daughter, Shayona Dhanak, from seeing him. The Dhanaks are Hindu and Murtaza is Muslim.
Murtaza, 25, has pleaded not guilty.

A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
