Jacksonville, FL: Jacksonville police arrest man for killing 6 puppies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriffs' Office has arrested a 24-year-old man after they say he killed six puppies.

Mathew Simmons was arrested for killing the puppies after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

On May 26, Simmons and his girlfriend were arguing when Simmons got angry and threw their dog, which had given birth to six puppies two days earlier, out of the house, according to an arrest report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

According to the report, the dog suffered a broken leg from being thrown out of the house.

After Simmons threw the dog, the victim broke the window to her car, which caused Simmons to become "enraged." Police said he then grabbed the victim and hit her several times.

As police were taking Simmons away, the victim and her family asked if they could go inside the home and get the six puppies. The suspect replied, "What puppies," according to police.

With Simmons already taken to jail, and the victim having returned from the hospital being treated for her injuries, the family went inside to check on the half dozen puppies.

When they were not able to find the puppies, they checked the bathroom where they found blood.

The blanket they had left the puppies laying on was in the washing machine. There was also blood on the blanket, according to the report.

Having checked all throughout the house, the victim and her family then checked the kitchen. Next to the trash can in the kitchen they found a black trash bag. Inside the trash bag they found the six puppies, dead.

Simmons was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, seven counts of cruelty to animals and felony violation of probation (Simmons was placed on probation for domestic battery and felony child neglect April 3 of this year). He is currently being held in the Duval County Pretrial Detention Facility. He is not eligible for bond.
