SPRINGFIELD – A 44-year-old Springfield woman was ordered held without right to bail after pleading innocent to murder charges Monday in the fatal stabbing of 35-year-old Corey T. Melvin, of 98 Tyler St., on Sunday.

Rosa Ramsey, of 73 Robert Dyer Circle, pleaded innocent in front of District Court Judge William J. Boyle to stabbing Melvin to death. Police said that Melvin was stabbed to death sometime between 4 and 6 a.m. but Ramsey did not call police until about 2:30 p.m.

Defense lawyer Charles W. Groce III said that his review of the evidence leads him to conclude that Ramsey’s actions were in self-defense. He said that she believed her life was in danger if she did not take the action she did.

Groce said that the death came after a history of violence on the part of Melvin toward Ramsey during a six- to eight-month relationship. He said Ramsey, to his knowledge, has no criminal history.

He said that the time between the incident and the call to police could be attributed to shock on the part of Ramsey. Groce said he did not know of any restraining order that Ramsey had against Melvin.

When police arrived at 73 Robert Dyer Circle, they found Melvin dead on the floor with stab wounds to his head and chest, and Ramsey had several stab wounds to her legs.

Police believe her injuries were suffered in the fight with Melvin. She was taken to Baystate Medical Center under guard for treatment.

A large group of family members of Melvin were in the courtroom as well as a large group of family members of Ramsey.
