Lawrence County, KY: MAN ARRESTED AFTER LAWRENCE COUNTY TRIPLE SHOOTING

Posted: Mar 15, 2010 10:30 PM

Police in Lawrence County have arrested a man in a triple shooting that left a woman dead.

Monday morning's shootings bring back terrible memories for people who live on Fuller's Ridge Road in Lawrence County. They say just about a year ago, there was a murder-suicide in the house next door the the one now encircled by crime tape. It's enough to cause some to re-think staying in the neighborhood.

"If things go on like this, I'm gonna be looking for another place. I can't go on. We can't go on this way," said Claude Copley, who didn't know what had happened across the street until he left his home this morning.

"I saw it all taped off over there, and I told her something must have happened over there last night. And so sure enough, it did," he said.

If the tape alone doesn't tell the story, a trail of blood splattered from one home to another does. Neighbors say 44 year old Ronald Young ran to a house across the street from his own, looking for help. Police say Young and his ex-girlfriend, 48 year old Sherry Smith, had been shot by 28 year old Jimmy Levering inside their trailer.

Police say the shooter and his wife, Wilma Levering, took off in a red Jeep that belongs to the victims. Police say then, just a few miles away, Jimmy Levering shot his wife, who got out of the Jeep, ran into the Fallsburg grocery store, and called for help.

"It ain't good for the neighborhood. It ain't good for us old aged people. It just keeps you on the edge all the time," Copley said.

Even more frightening for everyone, Levering hid in a patch of woods near Delong Branch in Fallsburg for hours as State Police Special Response units searched for him. Police eventually talked him out and arrested him at 2:30 Monday afternoon.

Jimmy Levering is charged with murder, two counts of first degree assault, theft, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was taken to the Big Sandy Regional Jail.

Sherry Smith was prounounced dead Monday afternoon at a hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
