HAMMOND | The bodies of a man and woman were found in a downtown apartment Friday, the result of an apparent murder-suicide, Hammond police said.
Officers were called to the apartment complex in the first block of Elizabeth Street at 9 a.m., after a sister of the female victim told police she was unable to get in touch with her sibling.
Responding officers forced their way into the apartment and reported finding a 47-year-old woman with apparent gunshot wounds and a 51-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to his head.
The tenant of a neighboring apartment told detectives she heard three loud bangs followed by a male voice about 3 a.m. Wednesday but did not call police, the detectives' report shows.
A .38-caliber revolver was found at the scene, police said, and the woman and man were believed to be tenants of the apartment complex.
Their identities had not been released yet Friday afternoon, pending an investigation by the Lake County coroner's office.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Hammond Detective Richard Tumidalsky at (219) 852-2997.
