A man was shot and killed this afternoon by Grand Junction police after officers were called to a North Avenue hotel on a report of domestic violence.
A white sheet covered the body of the man, who has not been identified, lying in the doorway of room 18 at Timbers Motel, 1810 North Ave. A report of shots fired was aired around 2:30 p.m.
Witnesses to the incident told The Daily Sentinel they saw or heard two gunshots in rapid succession, which came after loud commands by two male officers to “drop it.” Police Chief John Camper said the man displayed a knife before he was shot.
A young boy in his teens who was at the scene said the slain man was his father.
Police commander Greg Assenmacher said Mesa County’s Critical Incident Team, which is comprised of several Grand Valley law enforcement agencies, will handled the investigation. Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies and investigators had responded to the hotel.
