The death of a 34-year-old Gatesville woman Sunday was the city's second slaying in less than two weeks. The slayings are the first reported in Gatesville since before 2003.
"It's unusual for Gatesville," the city's Police Chief Nathan Gohlke said Monday.
Police found Nicha Jolene Cox, 34, dead in her apartment Saturday night after suffering a gunshot wound at about 8 p.m. Cox's boyfriend, Curtis Tyler Lunsford, 19, was charged with murder after being arrested at the scene, a residence in the 100 block of Surrey Lane.
The slaying was the second domestic dispute to turn deadly in February.
Carrie Dean Stroope, 42, was shot dead on the steps of the Coryell County Courthouse on Feb. 15. The alleged shooter, David Louis Henry, 46, then shot and killed himself, according to Gatesville police.
The couple broke off their relationship within a few weeks of the shooting, Gohlke said Feb. 16.
The shootings highlight the volatility of domestic disturbances, which can escalate from anger to violence in a matter of moments.
"Domestic violence cases can get out of hand quickly," Gohlke said. "We can't act on something we don't know about."

A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
