SANTA ROSA, Calif.—A Santa Rosa man has been found guilty of fatally stabbing the mother of his two young children and hiding her body in the children's toy box.
A Sonoma County jury Friday convicted 32-year-old Honorio Pantaleon of first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Patricia Barrales.
Authorities say Pantaleon stabbed Barrales in their apartment while their children were inside on Mother's Day 2008. The couple had apparently been fighting over Barrales's plans to leave Pantaleon.
Pantaleon's attorney said his client was suffering from a mental illness.
Jurors are expected to return to court Monday to begin deliberating whether Pantaleon was sane at the time of the murder. Their decision could determine whether he goes to a mental institution or prison.

A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
