RIO RANCHO, N.M. -- Two Rio Rancho police officers are on leave after the shooting death of a Rio Rancho man.
Police Department spokesman John Francis said the estranged wife of Keith Strickland, 31, text messaged a family member stating that Strickland was "out of control."
That family member called police to the 2200 block of Greenlake Road around 6 p.m. Sunday.
Police said this isn't the first time they've dealt with Strickland.
"He had a current and active arrest warrant on several charges," said Francis.
So when police officers Charles Weaver and Melinda Rossi entered the house, they were ready for the worst. Francis said that's when the deadly confrontation took place.
Francis said they were confronted by Strickland, who threatened them with a 12-gauge shotgun. It was then that Francis said the 24-year veteran Weaver shot and killed Strickland.
None of the officers were hurt in the incident.
No one answered the door when Action 7 News stopped by the residence Monday, but neighbors found the incident hard to believe.
"It's sad," said neighbor Rachel Wood. "I think they'd only been there for a year. We never talked to them. It's depressing actually."
Rossi and Weaver are on paid administrative leave while state police investigate the shooting. Francis said the state police investigation will likely take a week.

We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
