A domestic violence suspect fatally shot himself in a Peoria parking lot Monday around 11 a.m. after he was pulled over by police.
The unidentified man reportedly assaulted his girlfriend at a home in the 8800 West block of Willowbrook Drive. Shortly thereafter, he left the home, passing officers who were setting up outside to arrest him, said Mike Tellef, a spokesman for Peoria police.
Once officers initiated a traffic stop on the suspect, he pulled into a strip mall parking lot at 91st Avenue and Union Hills Drive.
"As soon as the officers stopped him, that's when he killed himself," Tellef said.
Police have not released the suspect's name or age.
Traffic traveling on Union Hills Drive between 91st Avenue and Westbrook Parkway was halted for about an hour while police responded to the incident.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
