John Adams, 65, died at the scene after shooting himself
The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating what they are calling a shooting incident that occurred at around 3:15 p.m. Saturday at 1207 Glenn Ave. in Lehigh Acres and left one person dead.
On Sunday Larry King updated the story in a press release in which he said:
"Deputies were told Alice Adams, 53, and her husband John Adams, 65, had been arguing. John Adams armed himself with a hammer as the argument turned physical.
"Mrs. Adams was struck with the hammer as was Kimberly Johnson, 26, who attempted to intervene during the altercation," King said. "As the adults separated, John Adams retrieved a rifle and began shooting, King said. "Alice Adams was critically wounded as a result. Moments later, he turned the weapon on himself and fired. He died at the scene," King said.
Mrs. Adams was airlifted to the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital and remains in critical condition. The daughter, Kimberly Johnson, was treated and released. Also in the home at the time, were three juveniles. None of them were injured.
Authorities said the two females were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers. A Medivac helicopter took one with critical injuries.
According to those in the neighborhood, the family was renting the house and may have moved in about a week or so ago. One neighbor said he had heard lots of screaming in the house. He told authorities he was in his back yard when he heard gunshots Saturday afternoon.
There were several 911 calls from the house and there were several children in the house at the time of the shooting.
The identities of those involved have were released Sunday night by Public Information Officer King.
