MARTINEZ —An Antioch man was convicted of first-degree murder today for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in the middle of the night as she lay in bed in 2007.
Jamie Batiste, 27, killed Faith Blevins, of Antioch, because he was distraught that she ended their nine-month relationship, deputy district attorney Jason Peck said at trial. Defense attorney Chris Varnell argued that the physical evidence implicated another man.
Blevins, 29, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the bedroom of her West Eighth Street home on Oct. 16, 2007. Peck said she had sent her two young children to stay with friends the night before because she was afraid of Batiste.
The jury deliberated for two-and-a-half days before finding Batiste guilty of first-degree murder and a charge enhancement for personally discharging a firearm. He faces 50 years to life in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge John Laettner on Jan. 11.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
