ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. - Investigators believe a man shot and killed his wife before killing himself at a home in southern Alamance County on Friday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies have identified the couple as Janet and Stephen Derick McPherson and say the two were estranged.
Randy Jones, a spokesman for the Alamance County Sheriff's Office, said the 911 center received a call at 12:30 p.m. from Janet McPherson while inside her home located at 3258 Rogers Road, near Graham.
"Because of the circumstances and some of the information brought up in the phone call, we knew it was going to be a potentially violent situation." Jones said.
When emergency crews arrived, they found Janet McPherson dead and her husband seriously wounded. Jones says Stephen Derick McPherson died on the way to a nearby hospital. Authorities found two guns at the scene.
Jones says Janet McPherson had filed a domestic restraining order against her husband.
Chris Johnson, who lives two doors down on Rodgers Road, said his girlfriend heard some commotion coming from the McPherson's house.
"About five minutes before my girlfriend heard the sirens, she stepped out on the back porch to give the cat some food. She said she heard someone screaming at the top of their lungs but she couldn't tell if it was a guy or a girl." Johnson said.
Neighbors say the estranged couple had a seven-year-old daughter.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation because one of the McPhersons' was related to an employee at the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.
