DAYTON — A woman who admitted assaulting a man with a pipe two days before his death pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence Thursday.
Veronica Spears, 46, was to go on trial Dec. 14 on charges of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. Spears will be sentenced Jan. 3.
Spears has been in the Montgomery County Jail since Feb. 17, nearly five days after she dropped off William Cheeks at Good Samaritan Hospital with significant head injuries.
Cheeks died at Miami Valley Hospital on Feb. 15. An autopsy found Cheeks died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Spears told reporters on Feb. 16 that she had hit Cheeks.
“They (police) consider me a suspect,” Spears said. “Yeah I hit him, but I didn’t kill him.”
Police said in February that Spears and Cheeks may have been living together in Spears’ apartment at 1665 Tuttle Ave
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
