ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) – A St. Martin couple was discovered dead Sunday afternoon in what appears to be a murder-suicide.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd told WLOX that deputies were called to a home at Oak Cove Drive in St. Martin, shortly before two. There, they discovered the body of 31-year-old Sara Porter, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen.
According to Byrd, the body of Porter's husband, Cedric Porter, was found nearby with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Police believe the husband shot and killed Sara Porter before turning the gun on himself.
According to the victim's father, the couple had been together for 13 years, but recently had domestic issues. He said Sarah Porter had signed divorce papers a week ago.
Police believe the victim was returning to the home to pick up her belongings when she got into an argument with Cedric Porter, which escalated until shots were fired.
The couple had four children. They have been taken in by members of the victim's family.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
