BOISSEVAIN – A an early morning domestic squabble left two people dead here on Friday.
Tazewell County Sheriff H.S. Caudill said 911 received a call about a shooting around 7:30 a.m. The responding deputy found 29-year-old Jessica Shupe’s pickup with her body in it.
Shupe had been shot several times with a handgun. A male passenger in the truck and other people in the area identified her estranged husband as the shooter. Police initiated a manhunt for Scottie Shupe, 35.
Around mid-day employees at a coal mine near the Virginia-West Virginia line called the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office to report they had found a body. Officers went to the scene and found Scottie Shupe dead of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Caudill said Jessica Shupe had been staying with friends in Richlands and also in West Virginia. Scottie Shupe, and the couple’s child were living with his parents in Abbs Valley.
The child attended Abbs Valley Elementary but had been kept home that day because of a doctor’s appointment. The school was locked down until Scottie Shupe’s body was found.
The investigation is ongoing but police do not report any history of domestic violence between the couple. There were reports she had recently tried to obtain a protective order but there’s no record that she had one.
Both bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner and detectives from the sheriff’s office are processing both vehicles and scenes.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
