Police believe a man who shot himself this afternoon in Douglas County is the man they were seeking to question in the death of an Aurora woman.
Alan Geisler, 46, had not been named a suspect, but police wanted to talk to him after his common-law wife was found dead Thursday in her home in the 18000 block of East Pacific Place.
Police are investigating the woman's death as a homicide. Her name has not yet been released.
Just after 3 p.m. today, Douglas County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a drunk driver after citizens on Rampart Range Road saw a truck crash into a dumpster.
Sgt. Ron Hanavan, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said citizens , who were in contact with authorities, described the truck and officers determined it was the 2008 silver Toyota Tacoma that belonged to Geisler.
Just as a deputy arrived on scene at about 3:25 p.m., he reported back to dispatch that shots had been fired.
"It appears it was a self-inflicted gunshot," Hanavan said.
Sgt. Cassidee Carlson, spokeswoman for Aurora police, said tonight that the homicide investigation remains open.
"Unfortunately whatever information he could have provided us, we won't have anymore," Carlson said. "But investigators will still work to eliminate any other causes for her death."
According to public records, Geisler was arrested by Aurora police on May 8 for assault and battery in a domestic violence case.
In 2000, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance in Crowley County and theft in El Paso County in 2008.
